11 Translucent Red Yellow Orange Clear Zircon Crystals – Naturally Terminated
The crystals all fall in the 6-10 mm range in length.
Total weight = 23.65ct or 4.70 gm
The coin in the photos is a copper US penny and is 19.05 mm in diameter.
Zircon naturally occurs in many colors – The crystals in this parcel (lot 11) are beautifully formed and the crystalline shape is easily seen in the photos.
Zircons are naturally hexagonal in shape, but oftentimes elongated with two shorter sides forming a point at either end of the crystal. The photos also depict some of the interesting ways these crystals reflect and diffract the light in bright morning sunshine. Zircon (zirconium silicate) is a natural mineral most well known as the source of the element zirconium, a lustrous white-gray metal resembling titanium. But it is also a vibrant colored gemstone because of its high refractive index and brilliance, close to that of diamond. The white zircon used to be widely used as a diamond substitute – and is now mostly heat treated to make a brilliant blue stone.

I began selling gems and minerals and studying gemology in the late 1980’s. I traveled around the states with gem/mineral and craft shows for a couple of years before settling in Gainesville, FL where I opened a shop called The White Cloud. In 1992, I got a job counseling, packed all the store stuff away and forgot about it until now. What a surprise to find these beautiful crystals and minerals after all that time…
